Meditation for Beginners
4 Simple Tips for Starting a Meditation Practice
Interested in trying meditation for the first time but don't know where to start? Or, maybe you've tried here and there but could never 'connect' with it. Well, fun fact- this was me about a year ago. Yes- I started making malas before I knew anything about meditation- I made them because I thought they looked beautiful and I fell in love with the sentiment behind them.
Fast forward till now and it is something I sooo look forward to in the morning- it is such a nice way to start the day and puts my mind into perspective.
So here are my 4 simple meditation for beginners tips!
1. Use an App
For me, this step was crucial- I needed to learn the foundation because I really had noooo idea where to even begin. I would highly recommend the Headspace App- I believe they offer 10 free beginner sessions!
2. The Space
Of course you'll want to find as quiet, calming space as you reasonably can. You can make your space more calming by diffusing essential oils (I love eucalyptus, it's rejuvenating but also calming), lighting candles, using a mala or holding crystals.
The number one meditation misconception- that you have to eliminate 'negative' thoughts or prevent a wandering mind. I hear people all the time say they would never be able to meditate because they can't shut their brain off. This is absolutely the opposite of what you need to do- it's all about creating more space between yourself and how you relate to your thoughts. You will learn to observe them without judgement and eventually you may start to better understand them as well.
Meditation is a skill and it will take consistent practice for you to feel comfortable. But there is no such thing as 'perfect meditation'- your focus will wander and sometimes you will forget to follow your breath. That's okay, the most important thing is meditating consistently, its about the journey and not the destination. Find comfort in that!
I hope these 4 simple tips give you some clarity on how you can easily begin a successful meditation practice. Next time we'll cover meditation techniques. : )
